In-depth analysis

As we have seen, each standard Shopify plan has a monthly fee and a cost relating to commissions on sales.

To choose based on costs, simply calculate whether it is more convenient to pay a higher monthly fee and lower commissions or a lower monthly fee and higher commissions.

For example, if we use the Growth plan in a given month and sell €10,000, all paid through PayPal, at the end of the month we'll pay €78 for the plan and €100 in commissions (1% of €10,000). The total will be €178, which is still less than the €384 for the Advanced plan.

Not counting the payments we receive with Shopify Payments, we can say that

  • For sales under €2,500 per month, the Basic plan is best.

  • between €2,500 and €30,600 in sales per month, the Growth plan is best

  • For sales over €30,600 per month, the Advanced plan is worthwhile.

Of course, these aren't the only monthly costs we'll incur. In addition to the commission we pay to Shopify, we'll also have to cover the commission required by the payment gateway. For example, PayPal charges a commission of 3.4% + €0.35 for each transaction.

Shopify Payments

However, if we consider the payments we receive with Shopify Payments, for which we do not pay the 2%, 1%, or 0.5% commission but only the gateway fee, things change.

The fee you pay is slightly higher than the one we would pay to Stripe (the system used by Shopify to process the transaction), which would be 1.4% + €0.25.

The Basic plan therefore pays 0.5% more than Stripe, the Growth plan 0.4% more, and the Advanced plan 0.3% more.

The commission paid is therefore lower and this makes the cheaper plans more convenient, as a very high turnover would be required to exceed the cost of the next plan with the commissions of the lower plan.

As our store runs, we'll actually receive payments through several different systems, and the commissions we pay will be a mix of both. It's impossible to know in advance how much the commission will cost, but we can evaluate how much we're spending month by month and decide at that point whether to upgrade to a higher plan.

A general rule is:

  • If I sell less than €100 per day, the Basic plan is better.

  • If I sell more than €100 per day, the Growth plan is worth it.

  • If I sell more than €1000/1500 per day, the Advanced plan is worth it.

Shopify Plus: the enterprise plan

The Plus plan is Shopify's solution for large stores with high sales volumes and more complex needs.

The B2B features that allow you to manage a list of companies and customized price lists based on customer groups, as well as the ability to request and validate tax information during checkout, make it a highly popular solution for sales to other companies.

The Shopify Plus plan opens up the possibility of modifying the checkout to include, for example, cross-selling and upselling dynamics, as well as modifying the information that the customer must enter.

There are also apps dedicated to Shopify Plus on the Shopify app store, including some developed directly by Shopify.

There is also the possibility of creating additional stores, so-called expansion stores, useful for differentiating stores aimed at different markets, although this practice today tends to be replaced by other methodologies that leverage a single store.

The Starter Plan

This plan is designed for those who need a management system for selling on social media . It offers Shopify tools but does not provide an online store on a website ; it can only be used to send a link and make sales via social networks more efficient.

With the Starter plan, customers go directly to checkout, usually starting from a link in the bio or a social post containing the link to the product they want to purchase.

How to choose a Shopify Core plan

A general rule of thumb about costs is

  • If I sell less than €100 per day, the Basic Shopify plan is best.

  • If I sell more than €100 a day, the Shopify plan is worth it.

  • If I sell more than €1000/1500 per day, the Advanced Shopify plan is worth it.

Of course, you can upgrade to a higher plan not only if it's more cost-effective, but also to take advantage of the additional features that plan offers.
